Masters helping Masters be better Biathletes
Meet the coaches...
Paul and Bryn met by chance at the 2015 Winter World Masters Games in Quebec City, Canada when Bryn hitched a ride with Paul back to town from the biathlon range. Friends ever since, they have cheered each other on at numerous club events in U.S. and world competitions across four countries. Most recently, their love for the sport took them to Austria to compete in the World Masters Games. From there they went on to see the best of the best compete at the 2020 Biathlon World Cup in Ruhpolding, Germany.
Fun fact: Bryn is Paul’s Dry Fire Coach.
Paul Kulas
Endurance Coach
Paul is passionate about helping others achieve their athletic dreams! An endurance athlete himself, Paul ran his first marathon at age 16 in 3:13:00. Needing to stay in condition year-round, he learned to cross country ski and set his sights on the American Birkebeiner, the largest ski race in North American. Paul went on to ski competitively in college. While watching the biathlon during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games he decided it was time to pick up a rifle. Three decades later, he is still competitive in his favorite sport. A highlight in Paul’s biathlon career was winning silver and bronze medals at the World Masters Games in Quebec City, Quebec. Paul has also competed professionally as a triathlete. He is a multi-time USA Triathlon All American and Ironman All World Athlete. In 2007, Paul attended the Human Performance Institute (HPI) where he studied under Dr. Jim Loehr, one of the world’s preeminent sports psychologists. Following his training, Paul became a coach of corporate athletes and for the next 15 years helped hundreds of employees improve their job performance and reach personal goals in the corporate world. Influenced by many great coaches and motivated by goals of his own, Paul’s 46 years of competitive experience shapes his coaching style. He understands the challenges masters athletes face while balancing family, work, social commitments, and training. His performance plans prioritize appropriate levels of effort with rest and nutrition, while his training philosophy teaches athletes to get to know themselves better: mind, body, and spirit. Paul specializes in training biathletes, triathletes, and runners. Paul is also head coach for the Blackhawk Biathlon Masters Program. Whether you are preparing for your first athletic competition or a World Championship, Paul is dedicated to supporting your athletic success.
Bryn Black
Dry Fire Coach
Bryn was introduced to Biathlon during the summer of 2007 and has been passionate about it ever since. She finds it thrilling to introduce this sport to others, help them develop skills, and assist people in reaching individual goals.
In 2013, Bryn was introduced to dry fire training and the mental focus techniques developed by Sondre Nordberg, former top-level biathlete, now elite coach and author of Dry Fire Training: The Road to Success in Biathlon. Sondre coached her for the year leading up to the 2015 Winter World Masters Games in Quebec, Canada where she shined as the best shooter over three events hitting 89% of her targets. Since then, Bryn has had the privilege of working alongside Sondre at many biathlon training events.
Last year with ranges closed and events cancelled, Bryn opened her Dry Fire Foundry which provides biathletes the opportunity for dry fire training on-line. Using the Zoom platform, these drop-in classes allow clients to sharpen their aim (skills) and improve their stance (positioning) while receiving tips from an experienced coach. Bryn has shared her expertise in over 250 classes with clients from around the globe and enjoys watching them improve and achieve their personal goals.
Bryn is a member and Treasurer of the Washington Biathlon Association.
